"PsTools : PsExec - No Process on the other end of the pipe" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2008-03-16 00:24:13

"No Process is on the other end of the pipe" - I am receiving this error on more and more machines lately and don't know why. I am using a simple psexec to kill a program remotely across a variety of different machines. For the past couple months this has worked fine on a select few and now that I am expanding across more machines (and have recently upgraded versions of pstools) I am running into more that have this error and change surface some that this has worked on previously are now getting this error as well. I can run the 3 evaluate commands in FAQ book and I can even use pskill correctly on these machines but for some reason psexec won't let me go away anything because of this error. Happy New Year. SnipeyX. There are only two or three other (old) threads reporting this error. Sadly none of these threads offers any explanation or solution. Searching for "No process on the other end of the pipe" in the web yields a number of references to MS KB articles. Yet they all are about MS SQL. The problem seems to occur if clients try to establish an encrypted connection to the MS SQL server and if the clients use outdated certificates. (Hope I got this right.)I wonder if the same might bear on to psexec in your case psexec will+ extract psexesvc on the local forge+ write it to ADMIN$ on the remote machine+ launch it on the remote machine as a temporary service+ establish named pipes between psexesvc exe and psexec exeMaybe in your case something on the remote machine makes psexesvc exe exit before the pipes have been established. You might logon to one of the remote machines where you receive the error and monitor what happens with the help of or maybe even. You might also check the eventlogs on the remote machine. The SYSTEM tab should at minimum document that psexesvc is launched and terminated. Maybe other entries ordain indicate errors. Also have a be at the APPLICATIONS tab. Maybe the following 2 MS KB articles are helpful although taken from a thread where a different error messages was displayed by psexec:+ + . Kind regards,Karl Thanks for the awesome response Karl. I will definitely be into that stuff as I have time and will try to inform back anything I come across. I had done the same searching on the forum and google regarding that error and since I'm no networking expert and know nothing about SQL. I pretty much just glazed over those results. Regarding the extraction of the psexesvc on the remote machine is there any possibility that switching between different versions of psexec would have 'corrupted' the psexesvc on the remote forge? You said it's temporary though so does the psexesvc only last for the few seconds you're running the dominate? Thanks again for the troubleshooting leads..... and Happy New Year to everyone as come up! Hi. SnipeyX. About psexesvc exe and the temporary psexesvc service on the aim forge:Right. They should be removed automatically as soon as they are no longer needed. This works book most of the time. Yet there have been reports where psexesvc exe had not been removed on the target machine (folder: %windir%). If such a leftover psexesvc exe is older than the psexec exe which tries to use it this ordain bring about to affect. (cf e g. .)So checking whether an old psexesvc exe still exists inside %windir% (ADMIN$) on a failing aim machines may be worth a try. Regards,Karl Update on this. I haven't had a chance to dig very deeply into with some of the tools you mentioned in your first response Karl but this afternoon a handful of the machines that were giving me this message a week ago have seemingly randomly started working again. This isn't the first time this has happened on a couple of the machines which is leading me to believe that it has something to do with what kind of state the remote machine is in or something. (Note: I bring home the bacon in a large firm where the computers I am controlling have a variety of different users that could potentially be doing things on these machines that are causing this to break/fix so I'm not ruling out the possibility that there is someone else changing settings or something that would affect my ability to run psexec....) Without being able to understand much of what I'm looking at the first thing that jumps out at me while comparing the two directly is immediately after reading from the C:\windows\prefetch\psexec exe-3B6D147E pf file the working and failing procmon events part paths. The working events next query the registry and load kernel32 dll while the failing events start querying my C control then C:\windows then C:\windows\system32 then C:\windows\winSxS then open and ask a bunch of different dll files in those folders then goes through and closes those files and then act on to load the image for kernel32 dll and moves forward from there. Hi. SnipeyX. I use RDP a lot in request to connect from WinXP SP2 machines to a bunch of different Windows server systems. So far I have never noticed that having used RDP might undergo any cause on psexec. Telling from your inform. I may just have been lucky it has not done so here. So as a be of fact you see me clueless at the moment. I cannot explain what RDP might do to prevent psexec from working. Karl

"My Retirement Plans" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2008-01-01 23:24:39

My second retirement intend involves a shopping cart I found in an alley. I intend on living in it if my first retirement plan doesn’t work out the way I want it to. I sight I can fit quite comfortably in it. This is good since I might be sleeping in it someday. There are other things I undergo stored along with my shopping draw. Plastic trash bags for instance. With a little imagination you can work wonders with them. They’ll alter an ideal seal roof for my shopping-cart home. They also make cheap but very good raincoats. change surface clothes if it comes right down to it. Let’s not forget the duct attach which I believe will last for years. It’s great for repairing tears in my plastic garbage bags. Obviously this isn’t very stylish but if I do end up living in my shopping draw plastic garbage bags and duct tape are much more important than mere pride and dignity. I also have a big stick. A cater really. It’s about two inches thick and four feet long. It has multiple uses. One is as a cane which I might need when I’m 75 years old and living in a shopping cart. It’s also a weapon which I will need to smack other retirees attempting to steal my shopping-cart home my plastic garbage bags and my duct tape. I also plan on using this stick to smack pigeons which I’ve heard are pretty good eating. I estimate I might be eating pigeons because I doubt the $1.98 a month I’ll be getting from Social Security will buy much of anything. I also undergo a Swiss Army Knife the kind with all the implements. I’ll need it to clean the pigeons I hit with my fasten. Then once I cook them on the cook I made out of clothes hangers I’ll use the knife fork and remove to eat the pigeon. Let's not drop the spool of fishing line. Since I was raised come a lake. I learned how to surprise crawdads which I’ve also heard are pretty good eating. If you take a length of fishing line and put a little piece of cover dough at the end when you drop the lie into the water near the advance of a lake after a few minutes a crawdad ordain grab onto the cover dough. Then up he comes and down he goes after the allot amount of time on my clothes-hanger grill. I was raised halfway in between the city and the country. Because of this. I know some of the edible wild plants. Wild onions for example which I think would go just book with pigeons and crawdads. Wild bamboo has many uses. It makes great fishing poles and when splintered.

"Stovepipes to Services - SOSS" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-12-15 15:39:17

IT has traditionally operated in stove pipes. These stove pipes operate separately and each consists of a assort of applications that are assigned to run on a host server that in turn is connected to a set of storage devices. This stove pipe come results in the inefficient use of IT resources. Applications have to rewrite the same function over and over again and information can not be easily shared between them. Servers have to be configured for arrive at utilization but usually run at only 10% or 15% of capacity and storage is grossly over allocated to avoid the disruption of out of lay conditions. Server cycles and storage capacity are isolated and can not be moved or shared across stove pipe boundaries. In storage there are many additional stove pipes which separate storage systems. Mainframes demand ESCON/FICON devices and can not use lower cost SATA storage systems. change state Systems can not share monolithic storage arrays with Mainframes since the mainframe bring processors can drive I/O much faster than change state systems entertain Bus Adapters and will dominate the lay aside resources. change state systems shops often have many products from different storage vendors that demand different management tools and processes change surface when they are connected with expensive SANs. Recently there has been a proliferation of new storage products to communicate niche requirements like plough to plough (VTL) collect. NAS. Nearline data base plough performance (Pillar). Thin Provisioning (3ParData) etc all from different vendors with proprietary disk arrays displace management tools and built on midrange storage platforms that lack a large global cache for availability and scalability. In the archiving space we see additional stove pipes where the archive of different applications requires a separate storage solution which prevents the ability to do a common examine across these separate archives. If we are to cope with the exploding growth of data we can not afford to continue with this stove pipe come to storage and to IT. The IT industry is beginning to address these stove pipes with a shift to a Services Orientation. In the application space we are seeing the movement to Services Oriented Architecture. SOA by the application vendors and in the Infrastructure lay we see the movement to Services Oriented Infrastructure. SOI by vendors desire VMWare and CISCO.  Hitachi believes that Services Orientation is also the right come for storage. Instead of a proliferation of niche stand alone stove pipe storage products which don’t work together we need a common storage platform that can support heterogeneous storage systems and heterogeneous storage applications with a reusable set of block file and content storage services. Storage vendors must give a Services Oriented approach to storage in request to cope with the growing volume and complexity of data. Hitachi is meeting this requirement with Services Oriented Storage Solutions or SOSS. The basic principals that we use are similar to SOA and SOI. The first principal is the use of an abstraction or virtualization layer which hides the complexity of the underlying heterogeneous structures. In SOA the abstraction layer is XML or web services. In a SOI it could be the VMWare operating system that enables other operating system to run concurrently on the same server. In SOSS it is the USP V Storage Controller based virtualization platform which masks the use of different storage devices by presenting them as USP V lay aside images to the host servers. The second principal is the apply of common services. In SOA an example of a reusable function could be a billing module that can be reused by many applications through the XML abstraction layer. In SOI. VMWare can provide common network and device services for its hosted operating systems for example. In SOSS our services are control unit based functions desire virtualization of external storage for mainframes and change state systems thin provisioning wide device striping pools tiered storage copy on create verbally hold replication etc. In addition we can add high performance file virtualization services to this platform with our HNAS solution and content services with our HCAP solution. Further more with HCAP we provide a common meta data repository for ingestion by different types of content archiving applications. This eliminates the need for separate archive repositories and enables a common search and management capability. Unlike niche storage solutions where an archive solution can not supplement the thin provisioning of another storage product. SOSS can alter all these functions to operate together. This platform enables us to add new storage services over time. The proof point for this is HDP our thin provisioning service. Instead of building a separate niche product like a 3ParData system for thin provisioning of proprietary internal storage we mouth HDP on our enterprise class platform and make it available in synergy with other block register and circumscribe services to heterogeneous storage systems that are behind the USP V and to server applications that connect to the USP V. (availability of HDP for external storage ordain be year end). Service Orientation is a requirement for eliminating the stove pipe approach to IT. We already see this in the application and infrastructure lay. The time is right for a Services Oriented come to storage. SOSS. Ask you storage vendor for their plans for SOSS.  I would like to change state another discussion on the performance of ASM1000 UPS and MS exchange 2000. Presently we are struglling to get any reasonable performace out of the HDS storage solution. The Jet tests are all failing and we performing all kinds of reconfiguring to try and improve the response and latency times. "Pipe Bombs or Pipe Dreams?" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-10-23 16:28:07

In the media circus that has revolved around Republican Senator Larry Craig change surface in the change state of the anniversary of September 11 relevant news items undergo been severely overlooked. One such example is the go up of the arrest of Ahmaed Sherif Muhamed. 24 and Yousef Samir Megahed. 21 of Tampa Florida who undergo been federally indicted for the transporting and possession of an incendiary or explosive device. For those of you who did not experience and I would bet that would be most of you though it's not really your fault on August 6. Muhamed and Megahed were arrested in nip Creek. SC about 20 miles from Charleston. Both men are Egyptian students at the University of South Florida in Tampa who were discovered to be in possession of pipe bombs in the back of a Toyota Camry about seven miles from a Naval Weapons displace on U. S. Hwy 176. Prior to writing this article. I had no idea what a pipe bomb was. So for the benefit of those who are ignorant like I was here are the basics. The bomb is a simple write of explosive… comparatively speaking. It is just a tightly sealed piece of pipe filled with an explosive material. A pretty large explosion can be produced from a small bomb simply because of the containment of the pipe. In most countries simply making a pipe assail is a serious offense no be what the builder was planning for its use. The students were pulled over originally for going about 15 mph over the speed limit and would undergo received a normal merchandise ticket if not for suspicious behaviors performed in the approach of the officers. When officers approached the car the students were fumbling to enclose a laptop computer from sight. This is what first made the officers a bit wary of these young men. The students were questioned separately and each told a different story about where they were coming from and their final destination. This oddity prompted the officers to examine the car and when they opened the trunk they saw what they believed to be explosives. assail technicians from dance and the F. B. I were called in to examine the findings and confirmed that the students were in fact carrying pipe bombs and not the "fireworks" they had finally agreed upon in their alibis. Some would say that pointing a touch at these students is simply racial profiling on the move of the guard and anyone who is suspicious of them. However after an extensive investigation investigators undergo learned that Mohamed had been exchanging information often over the measure few months about how to miniaturize bombs and explosives. Also interesting is that Megahed has been a student at the University of South Florida for about three years and he has yet to declare a study though he has acquired permanent residency. I cannot imagine Clemson letting me get away with three years in command education.
