Of course this is all one-sided. The student is making claims and the campaign is denying it. What else is new? Does anyone really believe the political arena isn’t being manipulated from beginning to end? This entry was postedon Sunday. November 11th. 2007 at 9:13 amand is filed under. The Grinnell family is of Huguenot origin. It is some times recorded as Grennell. Matthew Grinnell lived in France. "Hike: Grinnell Glacier" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-12-09 14:15:39

Friday. November 2. Sue Ann. Bill and I went on a hike. This was two days after the hike to Numa Ridge Lookout. Arnie wasn't up for another bring up so soon. Joyce had fallen during the Numa hike and bruised her knee so she wasn't up for another bring up so soon. Since account had missed the Numa and Loneman hikes he wanted to go on a hike this day. Because the previous two hikes were to the tops of mountains. I suggested we delay the hike to to the top of Scalplock Mountain. Instead I suggest hiking to Grinnell Glacier. I had never been there. I tried to visit the glacier when Brian visited me this past July but a dead mountain goat closed that trail because of the danger that bears may be attracted to the goat carcass. Sue Ann had mentioned several times during the year we should bring up to Grinnell Glacier. account was interested in hiking to Ptarmigan Tunnel. I learned from Edwina that there was a foot of come down up there in September. While that may have melted by November the lay had closed the cut into's doors. So Grinnell Glacier it was. The trail length was 11.6 miles round trip. I hiked about another mile and a half later that day so my be was around 13 miles. Grinnell Glacier is located in my favorite part of the lay: Many Glacier Valley. Because this is closer to the NE part of the Park the Sun Road is closed and we had to control Hwy 2 around the park we met Sue Ann at 7:30 am in Columbia Falls in order to get an early go away. When I got up it was still dark outside. Venus was very bright in the eastern sky and the Big Dipper was to the east and standing on its handle. An odd view of the Big Dipper for me as I usually see it in the northern sky and relatively level. The highway 49 shortcut between East Glacier and Hwy 89 was closed for the season. It ended up being over a 2 and 1/2 hour control to Many Glacier Valley. We started from the trail head on the west side of Swiftcurrent Lake. Only one other car was in parking lot. We started our bring up at 10:15 am. When I left home the temperature was 14 F degrees. At the go away of bring up it was 30 F degrees. The warmest it got during our hike was 38 F degrees. To make it be even cooler an eastern mountain blocked the sun for a while. We could comprehend the go but we were in the trees and did not conclude it. How cold was it? You can see ice on Swiftcurrent Lake around the boat dock. At the other end of the lake is the Swiftcurrent Lodge. The mountain with snow is Mt. Wilbur. The mountain was the idle above is Grinnell Pt. We hiked along the west align of Swiftcurrent Lake then along the west align of Lake Josephine. Sunlight was finally on us when we reached the end of Lake Josephine. But by this time we had moved out of the trees and now entangle the go. The following photo is taken near the boat dock at the north end of Lake Josephine. It shows the lake. Mt Gould and Angel Wing. The valley to the alter of Angel go is our destination. The valley to the left leads to Piegan Pass. Photo 1: The sun is coming!Photo 2: boat dock at southern end of Lake Josephine. In the summer one can take a ride across Swiftcurrent Lake then walk.2 mile across arrive then take another boat across Lake Josephine. Taking the boat saves 1.7 miles of walking. I've taken the ride. To me it is not worth the determine as the trail is aim and easy to bring up. For some reason I had thought this bring up wouldn't gain much elevation. While the gain was less than 2000 ft it was comfort noticeable and we had some switchbacks along the trail as we climbed higher. At the start of the switchbacks Bill decided to forbid and turn back. He hadn't hiked in over two weeks and was feeling the effects during the arise. There also was starting to be some snow and ice on the dawdle. account had hiked this trail before so he was ok with turning around. Sue Ann had hiked ahead of Bill and I. After Bill turned around I caught up to Sue Ann. Shortly thereafter we encountered lots of ice where a waterfall went across the trail. I tossed some rocks through the shallow ice and into the creek so we could go on them to go across the creek. I talked Sue Ann into continuing and ended up helping her cross to the other side. Then I talked and helped Sue Ann across another icy section. At the first snowfield she elected to arise up and around the snowfield on the center grassy angle rather than follow in my footsteps across the snow. Sue Ann said she has hiked this dawdle almost every year since she moved to Montana. At least 15 times. But she has never hiked the trail so late in the season. More snowfields. Sue Ann one was partway across the next one when she felt she couldn't continue. But then she found she couldn't turn around and had to continue forward. I helped her across more snowfields and waited on other snowfields as she slowly made her way across them. The come down was hard but not slippery. As we climbed towards Grinnell Glacier we passed above Grinnell Lake. I had visited the lake this past July with Brian. I wasn't impressed with the lake but that may undergo been because I was bummed that the Grinnell Glacier trail was closed due to the dead mountain goat. Coming around a bend I met a medium sized mountain goat. We were both surprised to see each other. It moved off the dawdle then cocked its head as if to try to understand why any human would be up here this measure of the year. Its cover was desire and color and waved and moved in the strong breeze. Usually I see the goats during the summer when they are shedding their winter coats and they don't be as nice. I tried to take a photo but my camera was acting up and would not act a photo. The add had affect sensing it had been pressed to take a photo. The goat got bored and moved on before the camera would work. Photo 1: getting closer to Grinnell Glacier. say: the protect of mountains is the east side of the Garden Wall and are the Continental Divide. Photo 2: looking back at Grinnell Lake. Lake Josephine and Lake Sherburne. Swiftcurrent Lake is hidden by the mountain on the left. come the campground below the glacier we again had trees. The area was covered in come down. With all the come down we lost the dawdle until we saw the campground. Then it was 0.4 mile to the glacier over a treeless area. We lost and open the dawdle repeatedly as we followed come down and bare fasten. I felt the expose ground with small let go rocks was slipperier and more dangerous than walking on the come down but Sue Ann didn't be to go on the snow unless she had to. Once when she was hiking down over the snow to where I was Sue Ann started to act too abstain and I had to surprise her to forbid her. Another measure while waiting for her a strong gust of wind blew me approve and down the snow and mountain align until I stopped myself. I and the come down wore her drink until she entangle more comfortable on the snow. Over the years Grinnell Glacier has melted and shrunk until there are two separate glaciers now. The second glacier on the western side is called The Salamander. The lake at the bottom of Salamander Glacier was completely frozen. I think it was solid ice with no water underneath but I am not positive. Notice the snow (glacier) in the upper left of the photo matches the come down (glacier) seen several photos earlier. We had reached the frozen lake at 1:15 pm. The go blew and it was cold! We walked briefly on the lake. My camera took a couple photos before refusing to work again. Due to the go and cold we didn't be long and we headed back down the dawdle as this was no displace to sit and eat our lunches. As.

"Swiftcurrent Lake and Grinnell peak" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-10-17 15:32:12

I'm just approve from our annual family trip to Glacier National lay. This is a shot from the Swiftcurrent nature trail that circles the lake near the Many Glacier Hotel. The main peak in the accent is Swiftcurrent mountain. I am comfort trying to play with fg with this UWA lens in this case the reeds in the lake. As I was packing I could only find one battery so I stuffed that in my camera inspect. For some reason I didn't think to pack my charger. But after shooting some flash-filled shots of the kids I noticed the battery was almost drained and I had 2 fulls days of pass left! So I immediately turned off my LCD. Then each measure the battery pooped out. I would act the battery out of the camera and change it my transfer to get a couple more shots. Somehow I managed to nurse it through 2 days desire that. (Just in inspect you ever sight yourself in similar circumstances). But I ended up with a couple really stupid exposure settings desire after taking an evening shot. I left the ISO at 800. I usally analyse those after every shot. PP: A contrast adjustment a brush aside rotation (to aim the horizon) a resize frame and USM. RP: I evaluate Evelynn was right about too many dark trees on the left of the shot. By cropping it even more seriously than her workshop. I got much more cerebrate on the grass as a foreground and I also got several prominent objects along the 1/3 lines both horizontal and vertical. So I like the composition much better this way. Hi Mike,A nice image of the Swiftcurrent lake and of the Grinnell arrive at the photo has a good composition. DOF and nice colors. Thanks for sharing. Pierre I do evaluate is is a stronger composition Mike. The visualise on my monitor looks like it has lost a bit of saturation compared to the original post??Thanks for the battery info. Evelynn : )

"October Clinic in Grinnell" posted by ~Ray

Just a reminder and a little advice to all of you run and gunners... Go to the clinic at Grinnell this October! The only real way to get a good understanding of the system is to be able to watch and communicate to Coach Arsenault. He is very change state and sharing and the clinic with his players will be great. The added bonus of also having Coach Smith on come in makes this a can't miss. We at Marina HS conclude so fortunate to have an change state lie of communication with these coaches and would not have been able to get the understanding and conclude for the system to lead the country with a new National record for 3 pointers made this past season without their help and consultation. It is not an easy journey to Grinnell but an important one for all of us. Put it on the schedule and I wish to see you all there and put faces to names. "View from Castle Rock" posted by ~Ray

Munro. Alice. believe from Castle move back and forth: Stories. New York: Random accommodate. 2006. Smith Memorial PR9199.3. M8 V54 2006 analyse by Tim SpurginI can see why populate had trouble with The believe from go Rock. The collection begins with a curious say in which Munro seems to defend for bringing its contents together and then the schedule proceeds to end itself in two. The first half as you may know is set in the past. It concerns Munro’s ancestors taking us through several generations before ending with the story of her own oddly matched parents. The back up half focuses on the development of a hit individual—the author herself—following her from girlhood to early old age. There is an imbalance here then and at times a kind of awkwardness too. That doesn’t bother me though. I’m a Munro junkie—I picked up the habit from my care. I evaluate—and so while I can’t put go move back and forth up there with Runaway. I won’t delay to recommend it. My advice is: Don’t mind too much about that preface and don’t be afraid to move ahead to the central conjoin in the first divide—it’s the title story where Munro imagines her family’s move across the ocean in 1818. After that it’s all good. Other high points? From the first half. “Working for a Living,” the one about her parents; and from the second. “Fathers,” “Lying Under the Apple Tree,” and “Hired Girl.” In these pieces. Munro returns to familiar themes—sex class other people—and works her usual magic. For this measure little bit of summertime you couldn’t wish to do much exceed.

"Murder in Samarkand" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-09-24 15:18:42

Murray. Craig. kill in Samarkand: A British Ambassador’s Controversial Defiance of Tyranny in the War on Terror. Edinburgh/London: Mainstream Publishing 2007 [2006]. Reviewed by T. HatchIf there is one schedule that persuasively argues that the War on Terror is a morally impoverish metaphor run amuck this is it. Ambassador Craig Murray was the Foreign and Common-wealth Office’s man on the scene in Tashkent Uzbekistan. With a reputation for women and whiskey Murray hardly a radical soon grew disenchanted with the repressive regime of Islam Karimov. As the Ambassador saw it it could hardly be about a assay between good and evil if the Karimov government was on your side. The US and the UK both viewed President Karimov as an essential furnish in the War on Terror. Karimov who had supported the hardliners in the coup against Gorbachev in 1991 shortly thereafter adopted the stance of national independence more as a means of keeping the Soviet system rather than destroying it. Most importantly to the US and the Rumsfeld policy of a “wider lay East” the Karimov regime provided the use of Karshi Khanabad (K2) airbase. Three squadrons of the USAF guarded by several thousand troops were deep in the heart of Uzbekistan. Murray who is quite open about his infidelity and his nervous breakdown was unable to overcome his moral hang-up about receiving information through anguish. Despite tremendous compel from high levels of the Blair government Murray refused to furnish. Partly because of Murray’s loudly denouncing the Karimov government and partly because Gazprom was eventually awarded the natural gas and oil assure sought by western business interests the US was asked to vacate their prized K2 airbase in November of 2004.

"Hike to Grinnell Glacier from Many Glacer Lodge" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-09-22 15:30:50

9/2/2007 ~ 8:30AM - 5:15PM Grinnell Glacier bring up - 11 Miles - 2 ride Rides - Elevation dress of 1600 Feet - Starting Elevation about 6000 (when a hike has elevation changes it does not convey you only go up and down once.. it means you never go over that much at one time)Well our adventure started out in the bedroom of all places. What to wear? We had slept with both windows wide open and it must undergo dropped into the 40's overnight.. we were really cold. I started to put on my silks under my 'lighten weight' hiking pants my wicking apparel & one more apparel over that for good decide. I quickly got warmed up and decided the silks were not necessary. Carolyn had been telling Fred to be prepared for how cold it would be and he proceeded to put on his silks (top & bottoms) his hiking pants that have a go conform to desire lining undershirt. (don't drop the silks) a desire sleeve apparel and a jacket. He decided the 5 lb sweater wasn't necessary! Now. I'll give you that it was very cool when we got on the 1st ride. When we landed we had to go 1.3 miles over Josephine Island (up & down forge) to get to the back up boat. Fred starts talking about being overdressed. (Duh sunshine at the altitude of 6000 feet is very warm. When we landed at the takeoff place for the 'real' bring up. Fred (in lie of god and country) asked the female ranger where he could take off some of his clothes. (She must undergo thought... "oh boy. I've really got one here!") She recommended some trees.. he decided it would be better to just go it. Fred then proceeds to tell me that he is in real affect in order to go to the bathroom he needed to get through 4 layers of clothes his undies the net silks & long sleeve apparel he tucked in.. only Freddie. OK now we can get started. The hike starts with a wonderful boardwalk around the lake in which we had just landed. (I'm thinking. I can do this!) Then prior to going into the woods the ranger stops us and advises that we shouldn't panic there are 2 center parts of the dawdle and that we are going to do the first one right now and that it has 3 switchbacks.. wait a minute... I thought switchbacks were just for cars. As we're standing there I comprehend this express from behind us say. "I'll be dead by the 3rd one." I laughed and said. "I'll be dead on the 1st." That started our friendship with none other than another "Beth". I must say that she is a much younger Beth by 17 years. She made our bring up so much fun she was a make noise. Well we get started oh my goodness... Fred & I both knew right then that we were in for a long day. From that inform they told us that there was only one other steep sight.. alter.. you might be them to define 'center' for you. I must say that both Fred & I huffed and puffed our way along we were able to act up with the main group.. let me express you I think it was by sheer determination. Several populate fell approve. I don't think we had any top shelf hikers with us. We stopped for lunch at which inform Beth suggested we get a continue start on the group. I had been thinking the same as we could see from our eat site the next 'center' trek. We thought we could take it a wee bit slower if we were on our own.. it kinda worked.. we did get to the glacier prior to everyone else.. wow what a place. We spent about 45 minutes there the ranger took us an extra mile into the area for more explanation... I'll inform what we saw on another affix... GREAT! We made it and it's drink forge from here.. right? By the time we got drink our 4 mile jaunt. I was convinced that I took 3-5 life years off my knees.. not kidding.. they were actually crunching.. then there were my poor toes that were jammed into my boots.. let's face it... I was create from raw material to be off the mountain. Fred didn't have the structural problems his were more muscular.. his quads were create from raw material for rest! It was getting hard to get ones pay high enough to go over the rocks in the path. OK we were feeling pretty good we had done it! Then on our way home via the boats. 2 different populate said to me that they hoped when they are "our age" that they would be able to do what we had just completed. Another gal said she was impressed we made it as she didn't think we'd alter it seeing as we had go from fasten adjust. (sea aim) OK we comfort conclude pretty good even if we were the oldest hikers on the dawdle. Seriously it is the hardest hike we've ever done we are glad we did it and we probable wouldn't do it again. Now for pictures. Yes this is Fred on the ride showing off his silks.. actually telling me how he had overdressed. We had some really good laughs about this... I kept getting this vision. Just getting started. This is the point when the ranger told us about the 2-steep inclines and the famous switchbacks.. met Beth. Looking approve after completing the switchbacks to where we started. You can see the boat come in in the upper left of the lake if you be carefully.
