"Designing and Building an Exhaust System" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2008-01-01 23:21:15

The main intend of an exhaust system is undoubtedly to route the bunt air/fuel mixture out of the car's engine. Along the way it may be used to drive a turbocharger and now-a-days it ordain most definitely combine a catalyst converter to reduce carbon dioxide emissions. But on a high performance car such as a modified street car or a modified race car the exhaust system does much more than that as it also affects engine performance and engine tuning!An exhaust system generally consists of an exhaust manifold (which is also called an exhaust header) a lie pipe a catalyst converter a main muffler or silencer and a tail pipe. Of these items the muffler is the easiest to broach with — simply replace the have muffler with a performance muffler such as a Flowmaster muffler to create a free flow exhaust system. However the performance muffler must have an inlet and an outlet that is the same coat (diameter) as your front pipe and your tail pipe. Your front pipe and your tail pipe should be the same size. The rest of the exhaust system is complicated by questions of back compel your engine's power band and your engine's maximum usable RPM. BACK PRESSUREBack compel is an important consideration because too much back pressure ordain adversely affect top-end engine performance as it ordain restrict the flow rate of the exhaust gasses at high RPM. The car's engine ordain not be able to expel the burnt air/fuel mixture at the required evaluate. The burnt air/fuel mixture remaining in the cylinder at the next intake stroke will contaminate the fresh air/furnish mixture and ordain rob the engine of power. Thus fitting a 1 inch pea-shooter to your engine in place of the exhaust pipe is not a good idea! But then neither is fitting a 10 inch sewage pipe. If the exhaust pipe is too large you will get reduced flow velocity of the exhaust gasses. The move velocity of the exhaust gasses assists with the scavenging of the exhaust fumes as well as the amount of air/furnish mixture that can be drawn into the combustion chamber on the next intake stroke. This is because the flow velocity of the exhaust creates a low pressure immediately behind it that sucks more gasses out of the combustion domiciliate. BASIC DESIGNGenerally speaking when designing an exhaust system for a 4-cylinder engine a 2¼ inch exhaust pipe is ideal but for a 6-cylinder engine a 2½ advance pipe is ideal though a 2000cc 4-cylinder go engine could do with a 3 inch exhaust pipe. The coat of the exhaust header primary.

Looks aside the vehicle features a two-mode hybrid gasoline-electric engine developed with partners GM and DaimlerChrysler that increases miles per gallon by 20%. Much like other hybrids the SAV operates using either electric cater or internal combustion depending on whether the car's at a lower or higher go and generates energy from braking. Unique to BMW the X6 features a panel that conceals the exhaust pipe when it's operating in the electrically. dish the dirt has it the car will hit markets as early as mid-next year—dreams really do go true. "Exhaust wrap for RT connector pipe" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-11-03 14:42:19

I've just purchased my second RT a 2005 R1200RT with only 3k miles and intend to keep it for a long time. When riding on slowly on loose surfaces like small stones I can hear the 'collide with' of stones hitting the exhaust pipe the runs across the lie of the engine connecting the two headers and behind the front wheel. I would expect that over time the connector pipe will get dinged chip and eventually rust prematurely. Do you think it would be worth wrapping this ~ 10 inches of pipe with some kind of exhaust pipe cover to destroy the potential damage to this pipe? The pipe is low fairly inconspicuous and I'm more interested in longevity than cosmetics. Thanks in advance. I added a fender extender to my 05 RT.. Looks so good others presume it was original equipment and protects not only the cross-over pipe but also keeps dirt and debris off the rest of the engine as well. Even saw some in stock and for sale at a WI BMW dealer measure week (Mischler's of work Dam) so the product is out there. Good luck! I added a fender extender to my 05 RT.. "Re: Generator Exhaust Extension" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-10-28 12:26:09

I would desire folks' opinions as to where on the scale from "ill-advised" to "honestly-a-bad-idea-really-don't-do-this" this concept lies:I will undergo a generator on in or about my art car. It's a 1600w. McCulluch fully enclosed sorta-quiet inverter ( ). The art car locate is a big ol' cargo van the interior of which will unoccupied (not even a driver). What I'd like to do is put the generator inside the [unoccupied] van cut a hole through the wall and extend the exhaust line out. This will alter it considerably quieter and help keep it out of the clean. Has anyone ever done this? Has anyone ever done this and lived?Does anyone care to suggest a exceed alternative? I'm not totally sure but I think you would be to make the exhaust line fairly large desire at least a dryer vent size. I evaluate there is something called approve pressure that could be affected if the exhaust line is too small. I did put a dryer vent lie up the side of my motor home last year so it would be less noisy and stinky for my neighbors on the few occasions I turned it on. The exhaust line was about 8 feet long. You could do one a lot shorter than that. It worked fine and the weakest link was joining the exhaust lie to the exhaust pipe. A hose clamp around the crimped flexible tubing worked out book. As long as the exhaust is being exhausted there should be plenty of air for fresh air supply. Maybe get the vent on high with the fresh air lever selected as an extra fresh air supply. Try it out. I think the beat that would come about would be poor performance of the engine. I undergo a 2" hitch on the front of my van that was used for launching boats. I am making a holder for my generator that ordain fit in it. Just a 2 pay long conjoin of 2" steel and some go iron to fit the genny. measure year we had the genny just sitting on the be and that worked fine as well. It was a honda ei2000 which is about 68 db on the loudness measure. With the music and everything else it was barely noticable. Looking send to seeing your creation!Timbshoo I have had tons of problems with generators in enclosed areas. Heat is a study air as is exhaust and what is a real problem is the intake. When my EU3000 is in the bed of my transport with the tailgate drink and the campershell open it comfort gets clogged up. The intake pulls in exhaust fumes and cloggs up the air filter killing the engine. On the Exploratorium I displace "fresh" air into the generator box through an 18" filtered hit and exhaust is through a similar hit. This is all actually mounted in a box as seen at:This way new air (I use the term new instead of "fresh" or "alter" as those words rarely bear on up there) is blown across the generator evacuating heat and providing air for combustion. The fan I use is a cheap 115 V fan from Wal Mart. It has worked great for the past four years and I even use the same technique in camp to change intensity the generator more and to act it as alter as possible. Captain ChuckInspiratum 2008 For those interested: my technique of putting the generator inside the body of the van and porting the exhaust outside worked excellently. The interior of the cargo van is quite large so there was plenty of air for combustion - change surface though I had neither the windows nor the vents open. I drilled a hole in the align of the van covered it with a small painted welded cage on the outside (to draw attention to the skin searing hotness) and ran a bunco (~10") length of 1/2" copper pipe from the generator's exhaust to the turn on the van. (I tried and failed to permanently adhere a threaded adapter to the generator's exhaust pipe so in the end a 1/2" coupler was just slipped onto the generator's exhaust pipe.)I only ran the generator for a few hours at a time (during the hot move of the day) and it gave me no trouble (except for running out of gas a couple times). The McCulluch is fairly change intensity to mouth with (relatively speaking) and being inside the be of the vehicle helped reduce the noise considerably. It didn't hinder with conversation at all. When the vehicle was at be you could conclude some vibration in the floor and railings but it was quite inconsequential. At night I moved the generator to 'round approve of camp and was able to sleep inside the van without being overcome by the stink of exhaust or CO poisoning. In the couple of years that I've had an art car at burningman. I've built,driven and maintained three vehicles. Heart of Pork (RIP)DuckySome Pig. My thought on gennies is that if you can do without so much the better. On the heart of pork I tried two things. First just swapping out deep make pass batteries charged during the day at camp. The second was using a high quality battery isolator and a second battery. On the Ducko I've users the battery change method and a gennie. On the Pig I used a gennie. Based on that undergo. I evaluate using the cars alternator to proved cater if you can get away with it is the beat solution hands down. I used the a bic75150 battery isolator from..

"Vanagon/Eurovan :: BA6 Heater Exhaust Pipe" posted by ~Ray

Here is a conceive of of what is left of my exhaust There doesn't be to be very much room to install a 90 degree pipe. OD of the remaining tail pipe is 1 7/8". After a few discussions with other BA6 owners I ended up making my own pipe out of a stainless elbow. Does this look familiar? I am wondering if the the end piece is too low. 640){ this height = Math round((640/this width)*this height); this width = 640; }" onclick="javascript:window open('http://images thesamba com/vw/gallery/pix/388552 jpg','','scrollbars=1,toolbar=0,resizable=1,menubar=0,directories=0,status=0')" alt="Image may undergo been reduced in size. Since you were able to get a mandrel bent SS tube how about making a tail pipe for your muffler. Certainly won't gain you anything but mine looks nice and is always clean. Here is a picture of an 85 BA6 heater in my 82 van the exhaust pipe is stock. The horizontal length of the exhaust pipe on the newer heater is different than the original that's why the belly pan is cut out to alter the exhaust pipe. 640){ this height = Math go((640/this width)*this height); this width = 640; }" onclick="javascript:window change state('http://images thesamba com/vw/gallery/pix/388693 jpg','','scrollbars=1,toolbar=0,resizable=1,menubar=0,directories=0,status=0')" alt="Image may have been reduced in size. move image to believe fullscreen." title="Image may have been reduced in coat. The bike was cleaned up real good before I bought it but I did sight a small oil run from the exhaust after test riding it. Didn't ask bought it anyway. Bike runs great but blows oil all over my backside and on anyone who rides behind me so I've always gotta take the rear (95% dawdle & 5% mx track). Previous owner said to run 32:1. I've run at 50:1 with same result. I;ve replaced the tail pipe with an sparky still no change (thougt maybe packing was saturated needed a sparky anyway). I try to act the trottle cracked as much as possiple when on the trails and I use quality gas with 93 oct. just rejet to have and go from there yz is 410 main 40 pilot but you could probably go 405 main and 35 control before you do this change the needle lay to the back up groove from the top and leave it there if it solves your problem if you havent construe the jetting guide it may be a smart move running 50:1 ordain actually richen your mixture because there is more gas gas and only the gas is the only thing cooling the piston go down if it does not get hot enough then it ordain not burn off the excess oil therefore resulting in more spooge oil acts as an insulator and the more oil you have the hotter the engine is fasten with a nice in between mixture of 32:1 or 36:1 other things to believe are when was the last top end build? what is your riding style? mods? ecthope this helps. I had someone tell me it might be a crankcase seal does that sound alter and if so how can I analyse it to be sure before doing the work? Nope it's either bad carb jetting or the exhaust packing is just soaked with oil (from poor jetting). Adjust jetting and re-pack the silencer and you should be good. i hace the same problem with my bike im currently re-jetting it im going with a 170 main jet (have is 172) we will see what it does :P i undergo the same problem with my 2001 rm125 just not to bad spraying more like dripping all over did you find out why yours sprays? Actually if there is trans oil disappearing then it may very well be a bad crank seal and it will drink it into engine. I got one doing it alter now am just waiting until it is convenient to tear it down because it comfort runs greatand has not fouled a plug but blows a fair amount of spooge. My rm 250 was blowing that egest everywhere and the problem was my float level was too high. Lowered it about 1/16 of an inch and now it hardly smokes at all and there is no spooge. And I increased the main jet to a 180 in the process. 10 minute fix. Didn't cost a dime. Previous owner had put in all kind of jets and it comfort ran like crap. It was a 10 minute fix. Just was not a jet. Mike My 05 250 did the same thing. I kept the mix at 40 to one put the jetting back to stock. The cure for exploit was to increase the clip on the needle one position. Now very little spooge comes out and I lug the snot out of it. Good luck The views and opinions expressed on this summon are strictly those of the compose and undergo not been reviewed or approved by ThumperTalk.

"Watercross landing hypothisis" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-09-30 17:07:50

Could it be that water is being forced up through the pipe so hard,the go can't run good after landing? A few guyssurvived the landings only to undergo no ability to pick up speed andstay on top of the wet. I imagine the force of wet going up the exhaust pipe would beworse than hitting deep disintegrate that causes bogs. Seems #35 had the jump and landing nailed but could not cater outto be on top of the wet. I did not comprehend engine revs likea slipping sing. My $.02 Edited: Mon September 17. 2007 at 11:23 AM by 800-3BANGER My move and several others were a enjoin prove of sing slippage cause by water ingestion. Duct tape shrink wrap or whatever can't rest the immense compel from the landing. Although. Shawn Parker landed his like 5 times in a row. My thoughts are simply his lack of go which someone said was less than forty MPH. Hitting it a 50+ probably lessens that chances of pulling out. i was #35 and i thought i nailed the landing when i hit im not so sure the sing got wet this measure i think banger might have something or it was from my broken limiter straps Originally posted by: whitefish....... Shawn Parker landed his desire 5 times in a row. My thoughts are simply his lack of speed which someone said was less than forty MPH. Hitting it a 50+ probably lessens that chances of pulling out. Looking through my pictures I can say that his landings were all pretty alter compared to some of the others. I'll undergo to be when I get domiciliate but I don't evaluate he disapears on any of his landings. I noticed on some of the other stalls that a small amount of steam can be seen coming out the back of the engine compartment as the rider bounces approve out of the wet. Two things happen... Water on the sing and the sing is far into the clutch when the track hits the water..... Basically in high gear for a quick second.... Brings the rpm's down real abstain. It also could be "cold fouling" ie cold water hitting the engine cooling it down to quickly causing the fuel in the crankcase to go out of suspension. It happens with two stroke dirtbikes during water crossings from time to measure. It causes a pretty good cry and lack of throttle response. Originally posted by: FordmanTwo things happen... wet on the sing and the sing is far into the get hold of when the track hits the water..... Basically in high accommodate for a quick second.... Brings the rpm's down real fast. i agree. You are in "high accommodate" and the bring in is loaded when it hits the water. A little off topic....... What do you evaluate was the problem with Shawns Rev that it couldn't get any go? My theory is the ported bring in. But I bet there are examples be that theory wrong. I was very surprized at the modest speeds of most of the sleds during the radar runs. Originally posted by: FlyZ28A little off topic....... I was very surprized at the modest speeds of most of the sleds during the radar runs. If you are referring to the one he jumped several times it's an old wore out 600. approve to the topic. I accept there could be a combination of several things. wet on clutches wet on pipes wet on engine. The common calculate is wet. With that. I will be building from the ground up a watercross spec sled to address all of the know problems. Feel free you overlap your ideas to add to exploit. approve to the topic once more. .. the sleds that are landing just move pull any r's after watched my video over and over and when i arrive it i got approve in the throttleit reved up at first then fell on its approach i would undergo orig thought it was the get hold of not shifting approve soon enough to low accommodate but now im thinking this really is the wet chocking off the motor.?????? build up a protect that would be deeper and longer then the factory one covering up the move right under the sides and up lie while allowing it to move out the approve. That would act the wet out I'd evaluate. Or just put it out the side.
