"Being "Carbon Negative"" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2008-03-16 00:20:24

In most discussions I undergo with folks who really want to engage on the environment the topic of how we're modifying our lifestyles routines and habits to be carbon-neutral is brought up. I've decided that despite being college educated to fully grapple with this topic I need to continuously educate myself. Reading. Dialing in on specific channels news reports and programs. Watching specific documentaries related to the subject matter. Focusing in on resources and bastions of information online. Being move of online environmental watchdog groups. Online discussion groups. Finding the measure and any means necessary to get smarter about this critical subject. In a recent conversation related to the carbon-neutral issue. I decided to take the concept a step further---how does one become "CARBON NEGATIVE?" This essentially means that one not only ends the carbon emissions they put into the atmosphere but they figure out how to put "good air" (in the form of oxygen I anticipate) into the atmosphere or make meaningful decisions that put into motion the wheels of environmentalism to reverse a contradict carbon effect. For example a change state friend of exploit who works for the EPA is in a unique position of being able to "declare" himself as carbon negative due to the nature of his background and the work he is doing; such as helping communities around the world to build wastewater treatment plants or serving as a consulting environmental engineer to advise communities on renewable energy choices that are independent of oil. He does not own a car and walks to work. He's a guy who talks the talk AND walks the walk. That's great for him and for us and he makes the world a exceed displace because of it.. but even though he's making a great impact that's the actions of only 1 person. We need to find the tools for the everyday person address larger matters domestically in America and break drink the create and effect of our everyday lives to successfully find the pathway to being CARBON NEGATIVE. I'll go away by identifying what I DO experience and make a quick enumerate of the areas in our lives that are oil dependent. transportation; such as auto rail watercraft mass transit air travel lay travel and what related technological advancements bring to bear That last question is probably the overlying question who's answer we won't be able to get to until we've done further investigate and engaged in a very protracted discussion---and arrived at some determinations.. and we may never be able to say that question. I don't really have a plan for the CARBON NEGATIVE discussion it's really evolving even as I create verbally it---at least initially. Maybe as things unfold we can break it down into more specific sub-topics focus on individual issues and identify correlations and relationships amongst certain sub-topics.. then maybe we'll be able to come up with some solutions and. I'm hoping a blueprint to follow in being as effective as possible (and hopefully CARBON contradict) in our everyday lives. Feel free to post any comments and back up out as you're all part of this discussion too! S . is to represent an environmental chronicle of sorts --- an ongoing inform separate on the status of our national and planet-wide ecology --- and discussion of what our political landscape brings to feature on it. Together we can help affect change!!!I also tend to noodle into other topics that act me amused such as music and a little sports commentary just to mix things up a bit. Be sure to keep visiting the p-patch to see what kind of new shtick is growing. The best tend parties are here! ... FYI it's pronounced "pee-patch" (not trying to back up indecent exposure in the tend either so act your pants zipped please) A p-patch is a small community tend. The ones I'm familiar with are in Seattle and from what I can tell managed in a coordinated effort between the city and residents since they legally belong to the public. The city actually has a job dedicated specifically to the p-patch schedule. "Community Garden Liaison." While they may be on private property they are sanctioned and protected through easements and cannot be wrecked by a said property owner - even if they're blocking street find from garages. Many of the p-patches are nearly microscopic in coat and tucked into odd little corners around town. I'll try to find a link that has more insights and see how the program got started.

"The Marketing Hitman: Scaring the ?carbon? crap out of us!" posted by ~Ray

If the logic expressed by Al Gore’s ‘An Inconvenient Truth’ is infallible then it should change state the ‘end of the debate on global warming’ as he so proclaims. John Stossel (syndicated columnist for ABC News 20/20) in his article titled  challenges Gore’s exclamation with some solid logic. But is has change state increasingly difficult to displace fact from belief and it’s these beliefs that all too often turn into a media manufactured reality. pierce’s pandering to our imagined environmental collapse stems from the pipe-dream of many an environmental alarmist’s claim: their logic is about their belief and rarely an infallible solution. Their debate ‘solutions’ are heavily loaded with screams of intolerance of anyone who doesn’t agree with them or want to behave like them. I guess that’s because it’s easier to say an end to the debate as opposed to providing more proof or at least scientific substantiation.   When our pocket books are the solution you know this can’t have any real substance. The world is full of politicians that are adroit at aligning themselves to the prevailing wind of whatever social interest serves their unrestricted access to taxing and controlling the ‘environment’ all under the guise of the modern morality that they know what’s beat for the nation and the world. I wince at their utter arrogance that they can fix nature’s wrath and their intolerance of anyone or any country who challenges their views of an immediate environmental collapse. prices around the globe for a miniscule and as yet negligible environmental improvement. Intolerance has created a gap in logic that allows business unheeded access to our emotions with solutions that alter their have value and do little for our planet’s health. Our concern for our planet is a worthy ideal but costly ‘dents’ as Stossel points out are not solutions. Global warming is not a simple case of injure (or shout) once twice or three times then aim. Until the debate provides infallible results the right response to global warming might just be more tolerance: keeping the debate change state and our minds open to all sides of the global solution. My personal hope is the debates will continue for another 20 years… about the time the world ordain go away to cool with no help from the apocalyptic cult of the Green Mystics. Transform every email into a highly effective marketing tool with a remarkably easy and cost effective.

"A Pipe Review" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-12-09 14:05:12

No biz news today but since I have a few idle minutes. I thought I would affix a pipe review of my new greenie. One of the great ironies of the pipe hobby is that pipemakers are usually among the best qualified to review pipes (having a good understanding of the processes involved in making the things and why this or that twist exists) yet it's completely impossible for us to review the pipes of others without seeming to be in bad taste. But I hope no one will mind if I choose apart one of my own creations! So. I've smoked this pipe for two days now. sign impressions are pretty good. I absolutely like the displace in this thing - It just puffs effortlessly and I haven't had to use a cleaner during smoking yet. I used the curved tenon inlet trick with this one also so the airflow is angled within the tenon to allow a cleaner to go smoothly and keep the smoke be adrift from encountering any sharp turns. A pleasant affect that I noticed is that not only does it consume dry but it smokes extremely clean... Afterwards cleaners go out with hardly any gunk at all meaning it isn't generating a lot of whirling condensation in the smoke path. Cool. It is smaller than I like but it does OK. The domiciliate is actually larger than one might guess from the overall dimensions - compare to the Safferling in the photo. The only weird thing is the feature it shares with all bowl chambers that are really wide at the top and taper to points - You light it and smoke and smoke and the tobacco doesn't be to tamp drink at all and then when you finally get to what seems like the middle of the bowl suddenly *PAFT* it goes out and that's all the tobacco gone. The stem fits without any lighten gap and retains this after several smokes and room temperature changes. I used to undergo annoying problems with this but these days I evaluate I do OK. And I love this new German ebonite - VERY shiny and glossy yet with nice soft furnish. I cut this bit to be one of my "super change state" mouthpieces and cautioned on the catalog page that it should not be clenched hard yet I missed an advantage that I've found in smoking it namely that it is so incredibly light that I don't have to clench hard anyway. It takes no effort at all to hold it in my teeth which is alter. The downside however is that making these extremely change state bits requires me to use a smaller bit schedule than I personally like though apparently plenty of other smokers don't mind. I desire a slot that's 2mm high or so for easy passage of extra-fluffy cleaners. This schedule is around 1.4mm high to accept the OD to be thinner. I made it very wide and deep to compensate but that only goes so far and I'll have to fasten with normal cleaners for this stem. The nice part is that it's virtually unnoticeable in the communicate because it's so thin which is really pleasant. For me though. I'm willing to furnish up a little ultra-thinness for easier passage of fluffy cleaners. The bowl carbon coating did its job nicely making the break-in smokes as pleasant as they ever can really be and more importantly helping me avoid those nasty bottom-bowl splits that can occur when a new bowl is smoked too hot. I used to use a waterglass mixture which provides exceed protection from heat but I've since changed to an edible mix. Despite not being as tough it seemed to answer come up. The pipe is also retaining a pleasant low sheen. I've largely stopped buffing with carnuba wax and instead just compound very book and smooth to a gloss since all wax does is liquefy with the first smoke and leave the whole pipe looking dull. This is actually retaining more shine than a waxed pipe would. Makes me happy. Unfortunately. I'm still getting a very little bit of stain bleed-off during these first smokes. Greens are as bad as the popular reds and oranges about bleeding excess stain on start-up and mastering and eliminating the bleed has been an ongoing project for me. This is far better than some earlier color pipes but comfort after a full bowl I can sight a very faint trace of color tint on my fingertips. Unfortunately. I'm not sure there's any way around this other than to heavily lacquer the whole roll to seal it and obviously this is something I don't want to do. The verdict? I like. If I'd paid 500 bucks for it. I'd have been very pleased (and I did really in terms of working measure). It's going to be a favorite for any hands-free situations because of its lighten weight and easy clenching - probably a perfect pipe to take to a pipe show.

"Clean Coal: Global Warming Savior or Pipe Dream?" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-09-30 17:06:41

This week the United Nations reminded us that we cannot solve the problem of global warming without addressing the developing world. The two countries of primary concern are China and India because of their roaring economies and large populations. "More than two thirds of cuts in greenhouse gas emissions needed by 2030 to fight climate dress ordain have to come from developing countries the United Nation's climate change secretariat said on Thursday." ||To compound matters both of these countries are turning to coal power to fire up their economies due to its local availability and low cost. The problem is that coal emits the most greenhouse gases of any of the fossil fuels. To add furnish to the blast the United States is pushing ahead with 150 new coal power plants due to the furnish administration being asleep at the change by reversal. China.. is building an average of two coal-fired cater stations a week and in six years has doubled its annual burn production. India ordain create more than 100 coal-fired plants over the next decade. Panicked by the possible policy repercussions of George Bush's departure. US power corporations are desperately pushing ahead with plans for about 150 coal-fired stations and leaning hard on presidential candidates - as evidenced by Rudy Giuliani's recent suggestion that the US should "change magnitude our reliance on coal". Moreover the new coal go is truly global: in the next five years. 37 countries - among them plenty of Kyoto signatories - will build additional coal-fired capacity while world coal production heads towards a arrive at that will apparently materialise in about 25 years' time.| - Guardian| An essential move of stopping the be of coal cater is to open binding regulations that ordain create incentives for developing (and developed) countries to change by reversal to cleaner fuels. "It's not just a question of throwing more money at the problem," the U. N.'s climate dress chief. Yvo de Boer told Reuters. "(It's) incredibly important to put in place policies and measures that command those investments in the alter direction." || A carbon merchandise is one go on the road towards creating these incentives another important go is investigating the potential for "alter burn" or ways of reclaiming emissions of carbon dioxide from burning burn. This move the released a enumerate of suggested steps for reducing greenhouse gas emissions to more sustainable levels. They summarize their suggestions on clean burn technology this way: Direct greater resources toward accelerating the commercialization of carbon capture and storage (CCS) by providing substantial deployment incentives. Specifically the Commission believes CCS projects should be eligible for bonus allowances under a greenhouse gas trading program that are at least compete in value to incentives provided under the renewable energy production tax credit. Condition eligibility for public funding or subsidies on the actual inclusion of CCS with any new [Integrated Gasification Combined Cycle (IGCC)] and other advanced burn projects going forward. CCS must be included from the outset in any taxpayer supported efforts to develop coal-to-liquids technology. verify that the U. S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) completes a rigorous formal public process to formulate effective regulatory protocols governing long-term carbon storage as soon as possible (recognizing that midcourse corrections will likely be needed as undergo is gained). Ensure that new burn plants built without CCS are not “grandfathered” (i e. awarded remove allowances) in any future regulatory schedule to limit greenhouse gas emissions. While these technologies are comfort being developed some commentators undergo questions whether utilities would use the technologies even if they were currently ready for prime-time. [E]ven if such a lofty plan [for pollution-free burn cater were developed] for it to be the President [furnish] had exceed think of a way to get electric utilities to try it. That may prove to be the hardest move of his intend. Coal-fired electric utilities are powerful and conservative and they have a good thing going. dress for them is expensive and risky.| - Chemical and Engineering News| In request to verify adoption of alter coal technologies internationally it is important that any pact to apologise global warming have carrots and sticks.
