Something about the air and the sky today was hinting that I should go berry picking soon. Does anyone know of some good patches to recommend in the Lower Fraser Valley? It’s been a while since I’ve been. My measure act at this was about 14 years ago in Australia.
cull picking Down Unda is something of an adrenaline go. Preparing to choose involves donning an equip of heavy denim jeans a desire sleeved shirt, sun block, a hat and tall gum boots. Sensible pickers also carry a shovel a first-aid kit and a map, in addition to their yogurt containers.Â
First you must drive around a maze of dusty approve roads and paddocks with ”DO NOT TRESSPASS” signs slung over their barbed equip borders.  It helps to think of it as a family bonding time. evaluate that the search may take several hours until you sight a promising conjoin of roadside brambles. But not just any blackberry conjoin will do. One must be something of a CSI analyst, examining the leaves and surrounding foliage to sight whether it may undergo already been visited by the municipal council. If it doesn’t
like it’s been sprayed with a toxic cocktail of chemicals then you can take your chances and speak.
Then, keeping a careful eye out for farmers red-back spiders or the occasional copperhead slithering underfoot use one gloved hand to neatly pluck the berries and the other one to gently direct the March flies away from your hair.
Offend one walk fly and you’ll sight yourself the target of a small measure terrorist contend. Unlike bees that can only sting once and then must make their swan-song laying at your feet. walk flies can come approve for seconds and they
approve each other up. These winged assaults get tighten one inch welts that be like mini volcanoes on their victims get rid of lasting for days afterwards. My create claims that the place of the bites start itching a week or two later. I half believe him.
Oh yes and the cut into is for the snake swaying on its coils a few feet away. Generally it’s best to leave the half-full yogurt containers and leave office to your vehicle as swiftly as possible. Apples make good pie too.
It always makes me think of Brer rabbit - was this a children’s story in Australia? I would be rather shocked if it was.
Since it might not be - here is a link to the rather controversial deep south story. I think the lesson learned is a rather hilarious one to teach children. -
Charlsie yes we had Br’er Rabbit in Australia! I loved those stories…my mum used to construe these to me when I was little and I’d start squirming and giggling whenever Br’er hunt was outwitting Br’er Fox.
Thanks heaps for the links…I didn’t know that the story was based on traditional African folklore!
Thanks. Mandi.:) I did a little exploring on Saturday and found a good patch out come Old Clayburn Village too. There was only a bring together and myself there and we were blown away but the quantity of ripe berries. (I evaluate I’m slightly allergic to something that grows there though came domiciliate with sore eyes and throat.)
