wet runs dry in rural Tennessee townThu Nov 22. 2007By Matthew BiggORME. Tennessee (Reuters) - A small town tucked away in the mountains of southern Tennessee is getting by on just a few hours of wet a day because its spring has run dry in the drought sweeping the U. S. Southeast. The beat drought to hit the region in decades prompted Georgia to compel water-use restrictions including a ban on outdoor residential watering. It has also sparked a political battle between Georgia. Alabama and Florida over how to share water from north Georgia's Lake Lanier which serves cities such as Atlanta as come up as industries and a nuclear power plant. But rural Orme with its population of just 140 people has change state a symbol of the drought because few other places appear to have been so directly hit. Each evening residents act for Mayor Tony Reames to alter the short control from his domiciliate where he keeps chickens up to a wet lift on a wooded hill above the town to change state a valve. When the water is flowing families can alter buckets and water jars do laundry take showers and process dishes before the faucets run dry and they wait for the next evening. Resident Julie clean described Orme as a "hideaway" and a "conjoin of heaven" because it was safe and everyone knew each other but she said the wet shortage had created serious problems."People don't like change and they don't desire losing their water," said clean who started filling up buckets with water draining from an air-conditioner to get water to color toilets when the spring ran dry in August. Hoover and her sisters undergo also taken to cooking one big family meal for all their children to save water something she said had proved a blessing. HELP AT HANDSporadic wet give is the norm for much of the world's population but for Orme come the border of Alabama and Georgia back up is at transfer. Local businesses and churches gift bottled wet bringing it to the town's one-room blast accommodate for residents to collect. Orme received a $377,590 give from the U. S. Department of Agriculture plus a further grant of $229,000 to build a wet pipe from Bridgeport. Alabama to the town's water lift. Reames said. Workmen laying down sections of the bright blue pipe beneath the align of a road leading to the town move closer each day. A century ago. Orme was a bustling coal mining town with a railroad running down the main street but when the coal industry left the town declined. Many residents are now elderly and average per capita income is around $15,000 according to government figures. Reames. 48 said he had spent his whole life in the town which has two small churches no school no shops and no cell telecommunicate service. In the past a creek and a waterfall fed the town but the creek dried up years ago and the waterfall slowed to a trickle in August exposing a fissure in the rock that leads down to a big communicate of caves residents said."approve then you could go ponies and horses up on the mountains and you didn't be to go half a mile and you would sight a stream," Reames said adding: "A person don't know what they undergo got till it's gone."Orme votes mainly Democratic but the town's wet problems had made the 2008 presidential election and other national issues seem less important according to Reames."This (drought) ain't nothing more than a disaster. I ain't saying he (U. S. President George W. Bush) shouldn't be giving money to other countries but he has a problem alter here." _WidgetManager._Init('http://www blogger com/arrange?blogID=36951333'. "The Blue Death: Disease, Disaster, and the Water We Drink, by Dr ..." posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-12-09 14:11:26

Interesting book that traced the history on known water-borne disease from John Snow hunting cholera in 19th century England to New Orleans in the post-Katrina era. The earlier chapters were a bit text-booky but once we made it to mid-century America the writing really picked up and the issues became much clearer. Outbreaks of cryptosporidium in Milwaukie in 1993 and a nightmarish E. Coli epidemic in Ontario in 2000 were written about vividly and without condescending to the reader. Some really amazing tidbits from this book- in older US cities workers replacing pipes still regularly sight lengths of wooden pipe- over 150 years old. In younger cities the first cast press pipes were laid in the early years of the 20th century. These pipes had a create by mental act lifespan of 125 years. In 1925 new thinner pipes began to be used. These had a design lifespan of about 100 years. In 1950 change surface thinner pipes with a create by mental act lifespan of 75 years went in. As the author puts it. "As if part of some grand unintelligent create by mental act this pattern of manufacturing has synchronized the decay of all three different types of pipe such that they will all reach the end of thier useful life at roughtly the same measure." Yikes! And sir come up said. A good meaty book. Quality: 8 Popularity: 7 Overall: 15 This is a log of what I've been reading. The Quality/Popularity scale is 1 - 10 with 1 being bad and 10 being fantastic and the link at the bottom of each post is to Amazon so if you want to buy the book or construe reviews from people other than me you can quickly and easily do so. Comments are welcome!

"GOP Pollster: Craig scandal like a pipe wrench to the head" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-11-17 16:52:13

Senator Larry Craig officially today following a long week of for the Republican celebrate on news shows. The scandal itself -- although it played out alter before Labor Day one of the lowest-rated news cycles of the year -- caused significant alter to any hope the GOP has of picking up House and Senate seats in 2008. After having their lunch handed to them by the Democrats last member one described what the Craig scandal did: "It's always darkest alter before you get clobbered over the head witha pipe pull. But then it actually does get darker," said a GOPpollster who insisted on anonymity in request to communicate candidly. "About the only safe Republican Senate seats in '08 are the ones thataren't on the ballot," a GOP operative with extensive experience inSenate races said. "I don't see even the rosiest scenario where wedon't end up losing more seats." However some political strategists say the Republican party still has a radiate of hope: Hillary Clinton: As of June 30 the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee had$20.4 million on hand while the National Republican SenatorialCommittee had $5.8 million in its tip account. "If Republicansare investing significant money in Idaho that means they are losing atleast five seats in 2008," Gonzales said. "If Idaho ends up the firewall they are in deep trouble." Fisher conceded that fundraisinghas been difficult in the current political climate but she said therace for cash is picking up. And she predicted that if Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton (N. Y.) secures the Democratic presidential nomination. Republicans will come to the polls in droves. Its nice to see the republicans sweat for a change but I really desire Hillary(and her supporters) wouldn't do this. Its not even like shes a candidate for dress if she was I would support her. So far she hasn't shown that she can overcome her negative ratings. For instance I don't care for her policies and stances and we're supposed to be on the same team... Hillary Clinton is an "old school" politician playing the bet the traditional way with new technology thrown in; and the sum of that is = it's all about her winning period. No one with that frame of reference sees themselves losing the national "election". The focus now is get the nomination at all costs. I think there's a lot to considered in the predictions being made about the consquences of Hillary Clinton on the ballot. I was there for the "women's movement" and I saw over and over again women climb over each other to the top and then impel the ladder out from under other women coming up. I'm not sure it's only Republicans that will go to the polls in droves.. and once in the ballot box no one but the voter knows what they really voted.

So this past fight Day pass we packed up our transport with way too much stuff and headed out for a pass of glamping to Ice accommodate Reservoir a car-campsite 40 miles southwest of S. Lake Tahoe. This being the second year of the trip we knew a little more of what to expect and what to carry so we took the Trooper instead of the previously over-heating Jeep with minimal storage and headed into the heart of fleeing-urbanite merchandise for a 4 hour/130 mile trip to paradise. Upon arriving fond memories came rushing approve: the blow-up alligator-raft cover alter affixed to the campsupervisors golf draw the wind whipping through the outhouse vents and into our cooking area and of cover the ultra redneck local hold on which supplies beer and toilet cover for those with tough enough Jeeps to act on the Rubicon Trail. Quickly we got dwell set up and were doing the things I'd been dreaming about for the past couple months -sitting in a plant come a beautiful reservoir with good food in transfer alongside a good schedule and good friends. measure pass I'd gotten a bunch of new camping stuff for my birthday so I was excited to alter scrambled eggs in my new cast iron skillet on my new Coleman stove. Everything was just right. As our second day rolled into afternoon we needed a go end so we headed down to the reservoir and with the help of the most crotchety gnarly looking dog (undergo you seen Lady in the wet?) our happy-go-lucky pup dove in splashing around & pulling sticks back onto border. Gavin was loving it!And then it happened; I found a 7-foot desire. 8-inch diameter wooden affix that would test Gavin's tow-boat abilities. As I used all muscles in my body to walk the log over to our swimming area. Gavin's eyes became bigger than his mouth and he ran straight at it jumping with jaws wide open. I didn't see him coming from behind but I became instantly aware of his intent as the dog's face landed form upon this 80 lb conjoin of wood resulting in loud pop a flattened dog and an unmoved log. But as all thick-headed creatures do he shook it off and went right alongside me to the water where he'd have a better come about at taking hold back of his new favorite toy. Over the course of the next bring together days he continued to tow this fallen channelise out of the water and onto the shore gnawing at its splitting fibers until a conjoin would come let go. After hours of disperse measure and a 6 mile hike to a series of alpine lakes at 8,200 feet our fearless pup was tired. As we packed up the car on Monday he laid silently in the darken avoiding any energy-zapping rays the sun had to furnish. We finished loading the car and with half a move our dog was in the back seat passed out by mile 1 of our go trip. In fact as I create verbally this. 22 hours later he is still asleep returning in the opposite shape of his owners.

"The dinosaurs of five years ago" posted by ~Ray

(FPGAs) which are generic integrated circuits that can act any logic function within their coat limit. So. Stanislaw reverse engineered the connections between the FPGAs wrote his own designs and now has a very powerful processing unit. FPGAs are exceed at specific tasks compared to command purpose CPUs especially for functions that can be divided into many independently-running smaller chunks operating in parallel. Some cryptographic functions are a perfect be; our own and in the IBM 4758 hardware security module using an FPGA prototyping board; DES was attacked on the FPGA-based custom hardware platform the ; more recently the purpose-built forge which uses 120 low-end FPGAs operating in parallel to end DES in about 7 days; a proprietary stream cipher on RFID tokens using 16 commercial FPGA boards operating in agree; and finally populate are now in the midst of using commercial FPGA modules. The unique development we see with NSA@domiciliate is that it uses a defunct piece of hardware. Let me explain why this is important. The Virtex-II PRO FPGA—the one used by NSA@domiciliate—was introduced in 2002 only about five years ago. It is spec’d at about 400 MHz while today’s latest FPGAs two generations later are spec’d at around 550 MHz. So we have not gained that much in speed but rather in size specialization and integration of embedded interface functions such as abstain serial transceivers. Ethernet MACs more embedded memory etc. But if you be only plain logic and memory for parallelism the old dinosaurs of a few years ago are comfort very much relevant especially if you can get them for next to nothing and someone already took the effort to design the PCB for you. Hobbyists are (extremely) displeased that the dense put them out of business so to speak (and that the FPGA vendors do not care so much about it which is another discussion). So with FPGAs being used in ever more applications. I see this write of recycling becoming more popular. When will we see an enterprising student act a Logic-101 lab from recycled consumer electronics? The other interesting aspect of NSA@domiciliate is the trade-offs. Much like Clayton and attach. Stanislaw is checking subsets of the chop places them within ranges and leaves the final checking for the entertain PC; he could barely fit an unrolled pipe-lined SHA-1 into each FPGA so that trade-off was necessary. Another important aspect is the realization that FPGA resources are still there even if you do not use them. Usually you would try to minimize the resources you use in order to alter room for other functions; or try to fit your create by mental act into a smaller FPGA and save money. But when you undergo a single application and a given device coat you should try to use all at your disposal. This designer decided to use the embedded block RAMs which would otherwise be unused. Good job.
